How to Embellish a Faux Leather Jacket with Buttons

Is this the year you want to take your winter wardrobe up a notch and not spend all winter bundled up in a puffer jacket? It might be time for a one-of-a-kind, fashionable faux leather jacket that will take any outfit from boring to chic in two seconds flat!

But we’re not talking just any faux leather jacket – we’re talking vintage Christian Lacroix… well, Christian Lacroix inspired.  But without the price tag – so you won’t be in debt and eating ramen for the rest of your life.

To create your beautiful vintage designer inspired jacket, all you need to do is find a good basic faux leather jacket and add some gorgeous, bold buttons. It’s the perfect beginner DIYer’s project – you don’t need years of sewing experience to create a stylish embellished faux leather jacket!

Choose the perfect jacket

Before you get into embellishing – you’ll first need to find the perfect jacket! Look for a good basic jacket that fits well and doesn’t have a bunch of studs, zippers, or other hardware already on it. If you really want to get the vintage Christian Lacroix look – try to find a close-fitting jacket with a large, notched lapel. Even better if you’re able to find a two-tone faux leather coat!

I would highly recommend checking out your local thrift shops when looking for your jacket – a couple of my favorite thrift stores here in Victoria are The Patch Clothing and Victoria Women in Need Co-op. You can often find a range of awesome faux leather coats at super affordable prices. Also, don’t forget to check the men’s section – it’s usually cheaper and there are typically more leather jackets to choose from than in the women’s section!

Choose the perfect buttons

There are tons of great choices out there when it comes to the perfect buttons for your project! If you want something similar to the buttons on the Christian Lacroix vintage jacket, look for super-sized square buttons. These square, retro buttons would look great on a faux leather jacket!

Just remember that with the buttons – you’re free to choose whatever style of buttons your heart desires! It’s your jacket – the more unique, the better!

Now the fun really begins – it’s time to bling-out your jacket!

Start by marking where each button will be placed with some chalk. Chalk will wipe right off faux leather when you’re done, so you don’t have to worry about staining your jacket! You can arrange the buttons in any design you like – a row down the front of each sleeve like the Christian Lacroix jacket, buttons arranged along the princess seams, or an embellished collar are all fun ideas to get your imagination rolling!

Once you’ve made your markings, all you need to do is grab a hand sewing needle and some thread and sew one button on each mark.

To sew on a button: Put a double layer of thread on your needle and knot one end. Push the needle through the fabric from the inside to the outside and pull taut until the knot is against the inside of jacket. String the button onto the thread, then push the needle down through the fabric underneath the button. Repeat 3 to 4 times to really secure the button, then tie off and trim your thread tails. If your button is one that has 4 holes (instead of 2 holes or a shank on the back), you’ll want to crisscross the threads so that it creates an “X” across the four holes.

After all your buttons are sewn on – rock your new embellished faux leather jacket!
