What Is Jute Fibre / What Is Jute Made Of?

Before we dive into the crafts, a little jute 101 — because understanding what jute is made of will actually help you get better results when dyeing, painting, or working with it.

Jute is a long, soft, lustrous plant fibre derived from the stem of the Corchorus plant, grown primarily in Bangladesh and India. After harvesting, the stalks are soaked in water (a process called retting) to loosen the fibres, which are then dried and spun into coarse, strong threads.

Jute is composed mainly of cellulose and lignin:

  • Cellulose — the same component found in cotton, which means jute responds to many of the same dyes as cotton: fiber-reactive and direct dyes work well.
  • Lignin — what gives jute its characteristic golden-brown color and slightly rough texture. It also means very bright, saturated colors can be trickier to achieve than with pure cotton.

Key things to know about jute: 100% natural, biodegradable & eco-friendly  ·  Naturally warm golden-tan  ·  Strong, slightly stiff & absorbent  ·  Sensitive to prolonged moisture and direct sunlight — colored jute may fade over time.

Now that you know what you're working with, here are 5 wonderful crafts to try!

Craft #1

How to Color Natural Jute

Coloring natural jute opens up a whole world of creative possibilities. You can go soft and earthy, bold and vibrant, dreamy ombré, or even boho tie-dye. Here's everything you need to know.

Choose the Right Dye

Because jute is a cellulose-based fibre, the best dyes to use are:

  • Fiber-reactive dyes (such as Procion MX) — the most permanent and vivid option; works with cold water and soda ash
  • Direct dyes — easier to find and use; good medium saturation results
  • Natural dyes (onion skins, turmeric, avocado pits, indigo) — beautiful earthy tones, perfect if you love a fully organic aesthetic
  • Rit All-Purpose Dye — accessible and beginner-friendly, though colors on jute tend to be more muted than on cotton
⚠️ Rit dye and jute rugs specifically: Rit themselves advise against dyeing jute rugs — see the supplies section at the bottom for details.

Basic Jute Dyeing Method

What you need: Jute twine, rope, ribbon, or fabric  ·  Dye of your choice  ·  Large pot or bucket  ·  Salt (~1 cup per gallon of water)  ·  Rubber gloves & apron  ·  Warm to hot water

  1. Pre-wet your jute. Soak it in warm water for 15–30 minutes before dyeing to ensure even dye penetration and prevent blotchy results.
  2. Prepare your dye bath. Dissolve your dye in a small amount of hot water, then add it to your larger pot or bucket. Stir in salt to help the dye bond to the plant fibres.
  3. Submerge your jute. Add the pre-wetted jute and stir continuously for the first 15 minutes, then periodically for 30–45 more. Longer = deeper color.
  4. Rinse thoroughly. Start with warm water and gradually move to cooler, rinsing until the water runs clear.
  5. Dry flat or hang. Avoid wringing jute too aggressively — it can weaken the fibres.
✦ Tips for the Best Results
  • Jute's natural tan base affects your final color: pink may come out peachy, blue may turn teal. Lean into these gorgeous organic shifts!
  • For ombré effects, dip only part of the jute in the dye bath and slowly lift it out over time.
  • For tie-dye, bind sections tightly with rubber bands before dyeing.
  • A splash of white vinegar in the final rinse helps set some dyes and softens the fibre.
  • Pre-mordanting with alum solution before natural dyeing helps color last longer.
Craft #2

How to Decorate a Jute Bow with Fancy Buttons

One of the fastest, most charming jute crafts around: making a beautiful jute bow and finishing it with a stunning statement button right at the center. The result looks like it came from a high-end boutique — and it takes about 10 minutes. 😄 Browse our collection of fancy buttons to find your perfect centerpiece.

What You Need

Pre-made jute bow or jute ribbon to tie your own  ·  One statement button (rhinestone, vintage jewel, floral, oversized — go bold!)  ·  Hot glue gun or needle and strong thread  ·  Scissors

How to Do It

  1. Make or fluff your bow. A classic 4-loop bow works beautifully with jute ribbon. Leave a snug center knot or loop where your button will sit.
  2. Choose your hero button. This is the most important step — the button is the jewelry of the bow! Rhinestone buttons offer magical sparkle against rough jute texture. Vintage flower buttons are romantic and cottagecore-perfect. Jewel-toned acrylics add a bold pop of color. Wooden or shell buttons double down on the natural vibe. A pearl button cluster reads as elegant and bridal. → Shop all fancy buttons here.
  3. Attach with hot glue for a quick permanent hold — ideal for wreath bows or home décor. Or sew it on if the bow will be handled frequently, like on a bag or package that travels.
  4. Style tip: For gift wrapping, try a slightly loose, textured jute bow with a big jewel button in dusty rose or forest green. No one needs to know it took you five minutes.
Craft #3

How to Decorate a Bottle with Jute Rope + More Bottle Decoration Ideas with Jute

A plain glass bottle wrapped in jute rope becomes a rustic vase, a charming candle holder, or an elegant dinner table centerpiece in minutes. This is one of the most satisfying bottle decoration ideas with jute — minimal supplies, maximum impact.

Basic Jute-Wrapped Bottle

  1. Apply a thin layer of craft glue (Mod Podge, tacky glue, or hot glue) around the base of a clean, dry bottle.
  2. Start wrapping jute rope tightly from the bottom up, pressing each row firmly against the last.
  3. Continue gluing and wrapping section by section all the way to the top.
  4. Secure the final end with a dab of hot glue.
  5. Add your embellishment! A button, dried flower, sprig of eucalyptus, small charm, or a jute bow with a jewel button — this is where personality happens.

More Bottle Decoration Ideas with Jute

  • Partial wrap — Cover only the lower two-thirds of a wine bottle for an understated, elegant look.
  • Jute + beads — Thread wooden or clay beads onto the jute rope before wrapping for extra texture.

  • Colored jute rope — Use your hand-dyed jute (see Craft #1!) for a personalized pop of color.
  • Word or initial design — Spell out a letter or word using thicker jute rope glued flat onto the bottle surface.
  • Lantern bottles — Wrap dark bottles, add a tea light inside, and watch warm light glow through the natural jute texture. Romantic and cozy!

✨ Special Idea: Champagne Bottle Decorated with Jute & Glass Buttons

Want to create a show-stopping gift or centerpiece? A champagne bottle wrapped in jute rope and studded with glass buttons is pure magic — and easier than it looks.

  1. Wrap the bottle in jute rope using the basic method above, working from the base upward. Stop about a third of the way up so the label and neck remain visible.
  2. Prepare your glass buttons. Using wire cutters or strong scissors, cut the shank off the back of each glass button so the back is flat and ready to glue.
  3. Arrange before gluing. Lay out your buttons on the wrapped section to plan the placement — a scattered constellation, a vertical line up the center, or a cluster at the front all look stunning.
  4. Glue with hot glue. Apply a small dab of hot glue directly to the flat back of each button and press firmly onto the jute rope. Hold for a few seconds until set. The rope's texture grips the glue beautifully.
  5. Add a finishing bow. Tie a jute ribbon bow around the neck of the bottle — or add one more glass button to the knot for a cohesive, jeweled look.

💎 The combination of rough natural jute and smooth, luminous glass buttons is one of the most elegant contrasts in craft. Perfect for a wedding gift, hostess gift, or New Year's celebration centerpiece. Browse our glass buttons collection →

How to Decorate a Jute Bag

A plain jute tote or market bag is an absolute blank canvas. Its natural texture, sturdy weave, and earthy warmth make it the perfect base for paint, embroidery, buttons, patches, and more. Here's how to make one truly yours.

  • Stamp or paint a design — Use fabric paint or stencils to add patterns, florals, words, or motifs. Jute's slightly rough surface gives painted designs a beautifully organic, handmade quality that looks intentional, not imperfect.
  • Add a button closure or embellishment — Sew a gorgeous statement button onto the flap, center, or pocket of a jute bag — both functional and beautiful. A rhinestone or jewel button on a plain jute tote is an instant upgrade.
  • Iron-on patches — Florals, animals, or fun phrases adhere well to jute with a pressing cloth and a little patience. Great for personalizing market bags or kids' totes.
  • Embroidery — Jute's open weave is ideal for simple embroidered designs. Flowers, initials, or clean geometric shapes pop wonderfully against the natural golden-tan background.
  • Fringe and tassels — Add a row of yarn or leather tassels along the bottom hem for an instant boho-festival vibe. Mix with colored jute twine for a layered look.
  • Ribbon weaving — Weave a colorful satin or grosgrain ribbon through the top edge of the bag for a playful, personalized finishing touch that also reinforces the opening.
  • Dip-dye the bottom — Using your dyed jute technique from Craft #1, dip the lower half of a jute bag into a dye bath for a gorgeous ombré effect that's completely one-of-a-kind.

✨ Special Idea: Decorate a Jute Bag with a Vintage Style Brooch

crystal brooch

For an instant touch of old-world glamour, pin a vintage style brooch onto your jute bag. The contrast between the rough, natural weave of jute and the ornate sparkle of a brooch is unexpectedly sophisticated — and completely on-trend with the current cottagecore and vintage revival aesthetic.

  • On the front panel — Pin a statement brooch slightly off-center for an editorial, curated look. A floral, cameo, or jeweled brooch works especially beautifully.
  • On a bow — Pin the brooch directly onto a jute ribbon bow at the handle for a bag that doubles as an accessory.
  • As a closure — Use a brooch to fasten the top of a jute bag or clutch instead of a button — functional, removable, and endlessly interchangeable.
  • Cluster of small brooches — Group two or three small vintage brooches in a corner of the bag for a maximalist, collector's-cabinet effect.

📌 The best part? Because a brooch is pinned — not glued or sewn — you can swap it out whenever the mood strikes. One jute bag, a whole wardrobe of looks. Browse our vintage style brooches & pins →

✦ Style Tip
  • Combine several techniques for maximum impact: paint a floral stencil, then sew a jewel button at the center of one bloom. The mix of texture and sparkle against raw jute is absolutely stunning.
Craft #5

Jute ribbon is one of the most versatile, photogenic gift packaging decoration materials you'll ever use — and it photographs beautifully, making it a top choice for Etsy packaging, handmade gifts, and product presentation. Rustic, elegant, and endlessly adaptable.

Why Jute Ribbon Works So Well for Packaging

Unlike synthetic ribbons that can look plasticky or overly shiny in photos, jute ribbon has a natural warmth and texture that photographs like a dream — especially against kraft paper, white tissue, or recycled wrapping. It signals quality, care, and craftsmanship before the package is even opened.

Packaging Ideas with Jute Ribbon

  • Classic gift bow — Tie a generous jute ribbon bow around a kraft paper-wrapped gift and tuck a button or small charm into the knot. Simple, stunning, and takes under two minutes.
  • Two-tone layered bow — Layer narrow jute twine over a wider colored satin or velvet ribbon for a textural, two-tone bow that looks high-end with almost no effort.
  • Belly band wrap — Use wide jute ribbon as a belly band around folded fabric, bundles of cards, stationery sets, or tea towels. Add a tag or wax seal for a boutique finish.
  • Bouquet and bundle wrap — Tie dried flower bouquets, herb bundles, or cinnamon stick clusters with jute twine for zero-waste, 100% gorgeous gift wrapping.
  • Wax seal tag — Combine narrow jute ribbon on a gift tag with a wax seal stamp for a sophisticated, artisan look that makes any gift feel special and considered.
  • Bottle and jar wrap — Tie a jute ribbon bow around the neck of a jam jar, wine bottle, or candle for instant rustic charm. Add a little button tucked into the knot for extra flair.

  • Etsy & product packaging — Wrap your products with a strip of jute ribbon before tucking them into a mailer. Customers remember the unboxing experience — and jute ribbon makes it memorable.

The secret to next-level packaging? Jute ribbon + a beautiful button. Every. Single. Time. 😉

How to Paint a Jute Rug

Painting a jute rug is a weekend project with seriously impressive results — the perfect way to refresh a tired rug, add a custom pattern to a plain one, or create a made-to-order piece at a fraction of the cost of buying new.

What You Need

Clean, dry jute rug  ·  Fabric paint or chalk paint  ·  Textile medium (mix with acrylics to keep paint flexible)  ·  Foam rollers or wide flat brushes  ·  Painter's tape  ·  Stencils (optional)  ·  Matte sealer or fabric varnish (optional)

Step-by-Step

  1. Prep your rug. Vacuum well and lay it flat on a protected surface. A light wipe with a barely damp cloth can help open the fibres for better paint adhesion.
  2. Plan your design. Bold geometric shapes, wide stripes, and large stenciled motifs work best on jute's textured surface. Very fine details can get lost in the weave.
  3. Tape off your design if working with straight lines or clean color blocks. Press painter's tape firmly to minimize bleed-through.
  4. Apply paint in thin layers, pressing your brush or roller firmly into the weave. Jute is absorbent — plan on 2–3 coats. Let each coat dry completely before the next.
  5. Peel tape carefully while the very last coat is still slightly damp, for the cleanest possible lines.
  6. Seal for durability. A coat of matte fabric sealer will protect your design in high-traffic areas.
✦ Tips for Painting a Jute Rug
  • Chalk paint in sage green, dusty blue, terracotta, or cream creates a stunning boho painted jute rug — soft, organic, and endlessly stylish.
  • Bleach (used carefully in a ventilated space) can be applied with a brush to create a lighter pattern on darker or dyed jute.
  • Outdoor jute rugs painted with exterior-grade fabric paint and sealed well are wonderful for patios and covered porches.
  • The texture of jute adds to the beauty of a painted rug — don't fight it. The visible weave underneath the paint is exactly what makes it look handcrafted and special.
⚠️ Painting vs. dyeing a jute rug: Dyeing a jute rug by fully submerging it is generally not recommended — the backing can be damaged and results are often uneven. Painting is by far the safer, more controlled method for rugs. See the Rit dye note in the supplies section below.
